About us
We sell pink salt goods for the home: lamps, bath and body products, and salt therapy pieces. Everything traces back to one place, the Khewra Salt Mine in Punjab, Pakistan, which is where the world's pink salt comes from.
The name is the point
Pink salt gets sold as "Himalayan," and that label is wrong. The salt is mined at Khewra in the Salt Range, a separate and older formation several hundred kilometers south of the Himalayas. We named the store after the real origin because the mine is the interesting part of this product, and because you can verify every word of it.
Khewra is the second largest salt mine in the world. It runs about 748 feet deep through nineteen levels and 25 miles of tunnel, produces roughly 350,000 metric tons a year, and has been worked commercially since 1872. The deposit formed around 250 million years ago when ancient seas dried out and tectonic movement lifted the beds into place.
How we talk about what we sell
Most of this category is sold on claims nobody has substantiated. Salt lamps get advertised as air purifiers and EMF shields. Bath salts get sold as detox. Pink salt gets described as a low-sodium health food.
We do not use any of that, because none of it holds up:
- A salt lamp does not clean your air. No study has found meaningful ion output from one, and a Johns Hopkins-affiliated assessment found no measurable effect on air quality. A salt lamp is a light. The warm amber glow it throws is a real and good reason to own one.
- Salt in a bath does not detoxify anyone. Your liver and kidneys do that. A hot soak is still a hot soak.
- Pink salt is not lower in sodium than table salt. By weight it runs about 368 mg/g against 381 mg/g, a difference near 3%. Its trace minerals are what give it color, and you would need about six teaspoons a day before they made any nutritional difference.
We would rather tell you what a product does and let you decide. It costs us the occasional sale and it means the things we do say can be trusted.
What we stock
Salt lamps and night lights, bath soaks and body scrubs, and salt inhalers and spa pieces. We do not currently carry edible salt or cooking blocks. When we write about those, we write it as category information and say so.
